Short, regular drives build skill faster than a few long ones. A 30-minute drive after school twice a week and a longer weekend trip adds up to about two hours a week.

Keeping the log

Most states ask a parent or guardian to certify the hours, and many have their own form. Keep a record of each drive as it happens: the date, start and end time, how long it lasted, how much was at night, the conditions and who supervised. A log filled in weeks later from memory is rarely accurate.

Log North Dakota's hours with Wheeltime

Tap start when the drive begins. Wheeltime times it, works out the night minutes, and adds it to a log the whole family shares — so the drives with Grandma count too. Export the log as a PDF when it's time for the road test. Free, no account.
